Conflict Management

Conflict is a natural occurrence in our daily lives, doomed to happen when the needs of people who may belong to our family, social surroundings or work place are not met. This is called a conflict of interests.

Conflicts can lead to the destruction of families and friendship, especially when they become emotional and involve beliefs or values.

Conflicts may turn nasty when they are irrational or when they start spiralling out.

This can happen when the sympathetic part of the autonomic nervous system is stimulated, causing a release of adrenalin (epinephrine) and provoking the “fight-flight” reaction. At that moment some managers, even well trained ones, may have some difficulty in remaining calm. And even if they can manage to control themselves, they pay a high price: stress hormones as cortisol will be released and they’ll start their destructive action.

Sometimes it is the person in front of us who turns uncontrollable, unless one has been trained to deal with such emergencies.

“With Your Voice”, using Voice Technology, can provide instant and sustainable effects on the emotional part involved in any conflict, and prevent us from being dragged into a non-controlled escalation.

After a few VT sessions, managers are able to maintain, on all occasions, a balanced autonomic nervous system that allows them to keep an open-minded attitude, to acknowledge the needs and worries of others, and meet them with active listening and adequate reformulation.

Managing conflicts in the workplace is a rewarding attitude that can bring appreciable and worthy results, leading to mutual esteem and establishing a climate of trust. To that end it is essential to apply conflict management skills:

  • Create an auspicious climate by recognizing and managing other people’s emotions
  • Be soft on people, hard on problems
  • Show that you understand the other person’s position and express what is positive in it
  • Avoid mismatch in your attitude, avoid being confrontational
  • Explain clearly what is important for you
  • Be intent on saving face
  • Aim at creating solutions and be prepared to accommodate
  • Distinguish and separate people from the problem
  • Put interests first, positions second
  • Explore mutual objectives

Recognize type and personality traits (Eysenck) to apply strategy by pacing and matching needs:

  • Introversion: persistence, rigidity, subjectivity, shyness, irritability
  • Extraversion: impulsiveness, lack of reflection, risk-taking, activity, sociability, lack of responsibility, expressiveness
  • Neuroticism: anxiety, low self-esteem, obsessiveness, lack of autonomy, hypochondriasis, unhappiness, guilt

Identify some important meta-programs

  • Mental meta-programs: relationship sort, representational system sort, communication channel preference, scenario thinking style
  • Emotional meta-programs: emotional coping and stress pattern, convincer or believability sort
  • Volitional meta-programs: direction sort,  (reason) modal operators sort, preference sort, value buying sort, responsibility sort

Intervention outcomes:

  • Conflict consciousness: assessing causes, nature, interest, behavioural patterns involved in the conflict
  • Obstacles to conflict resolution
  • Ways of resolving conflict (avoidance, negotiation, compromise, win-win approach
