Individuals
placing Mental Wellness at the top of their concerns.
Mental wellness
covers the fields of emotional health, stress, anxiety and depression.
The symptoms of mental wellness include good memory, sharp judgmental
skills, openness to others and aptitude to socialization. A state of
good physical health is the corollary of mental wellness.
Everyone knows about stress, distress, depression and overweight. It
also increasingly recognized that emotional problems coupled to
sedentary and monotonous lifestyles put people at greater risk for their
lives if only because of heart problems. The link between heart and
brain is widely accepted and nobody will dispute the fact that
depression precipitates a life-threatening situation in people who
present bad cardiac condition.
On
the other hand, little is known about “sudden death”. This death
by cardiac arrest more often concerns young athletes in a state of
apparent good health with no history of cardiac problems, as shown by
repeatedly normal ECG. The explanation provided is that of a death due
to
unknown reasons.
Since
the occurrence of such fatalities is spiralling, researchers have tried
to define a way to identify those at risk.
The
measurement of HRV appears to be a very reliable tool for that purpose.
A high figure of HRV reflects a correctly functioning autonomic nervous
system, while a very low one is a matter of concern. A low HRV is a
reliable predictor of sudden death in people with an already bad heart
condition.
When
people know about their own risks they are more motivated in accepting
lifestyle changes. It is established that quitting smoking and doing
regular exercise may raise HRV figures, by a mere 20%.
While
some people believe that inhaling fragrance can reinforce their vitality
and strengthen their health, we can demonstrate that some fragrances
may turn highly toxic to certain individuals, with a sudden and sharp
decrease in HRV figures.
It is
now possible to monitor one’s own heart: you just need a computer and
good software.
Many
who are health-conscious and know about the relation between weight and
health try to keep a serious regimen, but they are always tempted and
this turns into a constant fight between desire and reason, thus putting
them in a state of permanent stress leading to more weight gain.
Looking for support, they are taught about physiology, the interest of
keeping a log and doing exercise, and advised to follow regimens based
on calorie counting. The most highly-recommended diets include common
staples known as the four basics: cereals, dairy products,
meat and fish, veggies.
Still, people trying their best often suffer from relapses and fall into
binge or night eating, even if they are bent on substantial lifestyle
changes. Ultimately, out of discouragement, they return to previous and
dangerous habits.
Active lifestyles and recreational pursuits are an absolute condition to
wellness. But this is theory. What if that objective cannot be sustained
in practice?
Some
people demonstrate an exceptional mental toughness, and they can
directly live an ascetic life that would scare most people, who need to
be rewarded with a wider range of interests where socialization plays an
important part. On the other hand, the one-goal oriented people have
a monotonous alimentation based on cereals (pasta, dairy foods, or
proteins mostly derived from milk) that may explain their alarming
dedication to sport. For some people those foods are dangerous
because they transform into exorphins, morphine-like peptides that
bind to specific receptors in the brain with social withdrawal and
depression as results.
It is
certain that doing a twenty mile jog three times a week will keep people
in good physical shape, but what keeps them going relates more to
addiction than to sane balance between pleasure and necessity. Such
regular and constraining training causes the brain to release a lot of
endorphins, the molecules of pleasure that explain the constant need to
go on, at a price to family ties and social life. These people have
become sport addicts.
It is
more of a blind pursuit than wellness. It is doubtful whether it helps
in enhancing self-image or building self-esteem. It can become like
fanaticism.
Nutrition cannot be dissociated from mental wellness
as in the example quoted, the solitary jogger was depressive and
suicidal due to the large amount of dairy foods and derived proteins he
was consuming. Research has demonstrated that some people do not have
the necessary peptidases to destroy those food proteins that transform
into peptides activating the uptake of serotonin in the brain synapses
(neural connections) with depression as consequence.
Some
nutrients that play major roles in mental wellness are essential fatty
acids, vitamins and minerals. In addition, there are numerous botanical
ingredients that can improve mood and reduce anxiety, and there are many
compounds that naturally occur in the body and can be taken
as supplements to promote chemical balance for improved mental health. In
combination with a healthy diet and exercise regimen, these ingredients
can contribute to enhanced mental wellness and may dissipate symptoms of
depression and anxiety. People who have a balanced nutrition and eat a
lot of fruits
and vegetables
rarely enter the statistic for depression.
When
considering food and wellness, there is one thing you can do to
check the toxicity of foods: in the morning, while you are in bed, check
your pulse. It shouldn’t go over 80 (this is a maximum). Then hold a
tiny piece of food over your chest: if your heart beats start
accelerating (with 10 more heart beats), there is a good chance that the
food is toxic to you, whatever it may be!
Wellness, if defined as the pursuit of optimal health, will need to
reflect the delicate balance of our inner energies in their
psychological as well as physical aspects.
Thus
the goals pursued will aim at being realistic, encompassing work, family
and friends.
A
good wellness program will aim at eliminating stress and releasing
tension and anxiety, while reinforcing pleasure, relaxation and feelings
of security and confidence.
When
should you consider looking for help to achieve wellness?
If
you tend to social withdrawal or isolation, if anxiety has
become your companion, if you have eating disorders, if you are unable
to focus or concentrate, if you have trouble recalling recent memories,
if you become suddenly emotional, if you have sleep disorders, if you
often catch flu or suffer from physical ailments that never stop…then
you need support.
To
achieve and maintain mental wellness one must choose a healthy lifestyle
and display affirmative action for oneself in front of others.
Besides that, it is essential to maintain good harmony with the
surrounding world and fully understand how most common food substances
can affect our memory and feeling.
