Who are our clients
?
Chief executive
officers (CEOs), Top-level
Managers,
Direct
Supervisors,
Human
Resource
Managers.

In
the workforce, this is the category who generally used to receive the
best protection against stress, anxiety and depression. A study
published in the American Journal of Epidemiology reveals that compared
to the general population, top-level executives and managers were 50%
less likely to die if men, and 38% less likely to die if women, the
gender difference being related to lung cancer and smoking. ”Employment
in high-level occupations appears to confer a substantial, but not
necessarily equal, level of survival advantage between men and women.” (A.J.E
2001).
However stress-related problems are indicated in half of all premature
deaths.
Many
factors contribute to stress at work, and the top-level manager must
identify them if he is to alleviate the strain on his team and maintain
its performance.
Top-level executives tend to absorb and filter the stress of others, and
to
this end they need to be able to detect or recognize warning symptoms of
stress around them and take action.
Increased responsibility, pressure and job uncertainty have led to
unprecedented levels of stress in the workplace, affecting performance
at work, and health and happiness at home. The cost of stress to the
employer is mounting, and organisations need to recognise stress in
their employees and train their staff to manage stress and pressure
productively.
The
top-level managerial function increasingly includes high exposure to
stress of others and the need to be prepared to cope successfully with
stressful situations and be able to:
-
Identify negative stressors
-
Apply practical stress-coping strategies
-
Develop a stress-resistant personality
-
Modify negative habits and patterns
-
Manage conflict and difficult situations
-
Learn no-fail relaxation techniques
-
Practice practical stress-reduction strategies
-
Understand how stress is caused and how it affects people
-
Recognise stress in others and help them manage it more effectively
It is
worth introducing psychology to top-level executives and managers since
it can greatly contribute to improving their performance, but there are
hitches:
-
It is difficult for a top-level executive to find the time to commit
himself to regular sessions with a therapist.
-
A company’s problems may be highly sensitive and there can be a
reluctance to talk about them.
