Acquiring social skills

Have you remarked that some people, friends or colleagues, demonstrate effective behaviour while others do not? Socially skilful people are capable of responding to challenge and provocation from others in a way that will soothe these persons rather than inflame them, they know how to make their wishes known to others, accurately interpret verbal or non-verbal messages from others, and enjoy meeting and conversing with people. And they are good at figuring out how to behave in a way that leads other people to like them.

Social skills don’t come naturally to everybody. To some people these are innate qualities. Fortunately we also can acquire them through observing and modelling others, throughout our childhood and adolescence. Most often a great part of the job was done unconsciously when we tested and integrated what we judged to be appropriate in our repertoire of behaviours.

Recent advances in research have demonstrated that in many cases social withdrawal inclinations that will inhibit the development of social skills are the ill side-effects of particular foods shown to be toxic to some individuals. In some cases, urine examination reporting high levels of morphine-like peptides will prove what foods are toxic. Keeping away from certain foods will dramatically improve the “innate” propensity to social withdrawal and shyness.

Deficit of social skills leads to:

  • Feeling of isolation, loneliness, rejection, poor self-esteem, social withdrawal

  • Feeling of not being understood by others; frustration because other people do not take account of your wishes

  • Psychological problems that can be both the cause and effect, such as depression, anxiety, aggression and suicidal attempts

WithYourVoice Ltd offers you techniques to prevent these feelings from developing into serious problems.

Our intervention includes:

  • identification of factors that interfere with your social skill performance. What prevents you from demonstrating a skill that you already have? Why do you have trouble in saying “no” to others? Why do you feel an inhibition within yourself whenever you want to make a request?

  • focus on facilitating the desirable behaviours as well as eliminating the undesirable ones (e.g. shyness)

  • emphasis on generalisation and maintenance of your skills into multiple, real life situations

Using Voice Technology and NLP tools, it will become easy to:

  • erase anger or identify toxins that cause sudden change in character, high sensitivity to  negative remarks or provocations leading to fits of temper. NLP will provide the tools and skills of mouth necessary to gracefully reformulate ill-voiced remarks or accept them elegantly when they are grounded

  • recognise/understand others’ points-of-view: a good relationship begins when others feel understood and accepted

  • conduct peer negotiation and conflict management, especially in enterprises where the objective is to be productive

  • show assertiveness and vocal skills when facing peers: ability to say “no” while feeling supportive, coping skills to resist pressure such as smoking, drinking or money spending etc.

  • master effective communication: giving, receiving and interpreting messages correctly from others; stating your point of view with confidence and assurance, making your wishes known to others and doing “I” statements; communication will become enjoyable and rewarding

  • be responsible in decision-making and time-management: series of poor decisions, mistakes in decision or mismanagement of one’s time always cause disappointment and reinforce low self-concept

Let yourself be amazed by becoming:

  • assertive and positive in the way you think and behave

  • confident, with internal locus  of control

  • capable of efficiently handling bullying behaviour from others, criticism or failure

  • ready to deepen and improve your personal and professional relationships

  • talented at meeting people, conversing, selecting new friends or a new partner

Good social skills are critical to successful functioning in life. These skills enable you to know what to say, how to make good choices and how to behave in diverse situations. Social skills are your assets. In this ever more complex world, learning or improving them will enhance the development and maintenance of relationships - leading to a better life.
