WithYourVoice for
Companies
Introduction
Leading
companies have always been able to adapt to ever-changing conditions
brought in by new inventions, new markets and new demands from customers
or fresh government legislation. A striking example is NOKIA: it went
from being a small local tire manufacturer threatened by globalization
to the cell phone giant we all know!
The
need for companies to address the problem of change by providing the
workforce with new coping skills to face an increasingly complex
environment has long been recognized by human resources managers (HRMs),
and training in companies is now widely accepted, aimed at improving job
performance and boosting sales. External agents also focus on
ameliorating the quality of life of line workers or middle line
managers.
Until
recently, top-level managers and executives were protected from the
stress generated by these new conditions.
Globalization, however, by its very nature, is bringing considerable
strain
to those most important to the company: recent
studies show that 70% of
top-level managers declare that they are tired most or nearly all the
time; and 50 % say they are simply exhausted. Global business also means
constant travelling, at a cost to health.
The
silent evolution of stress can lead to catastrophic consequences for a
company when it concerns top-level managers and executives through
errors made in judgment or decision-making! The toll can be huge!
(How can stress affect health)
WithYourVoice’s mission is to cater to the specific needs of
top-level personnel by offering them tailor-made, pertinent, efficacious
and evidence-based skills and techniques to eliminate stress.
Brains are the most important resource for any enterprise that wants to
be the fittest in the market.
Hearts are pumps designed to work 24 hours out of 24 hours for 100 years
if well maintained.
But
hearts are not just pumps! Brains are not just grey matter!
They
are emotional!
Under
stress there is a cascade of biochemical events with the release of
neurotransmitters and hormones that directly influences our brain and
heart.
There
is an intimate relationship between brain and heart, the condition of
one reacting on the other in a recurrent, reflexive loop!
Brain
activity can basically be divided between Central Nervous System (CNS)
and Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).
While
our CNS controls our conscious activity (motility, perceptions,
emotions, memory, learning etc.), our
ANS
is in charge of our respiratory, digestive, cardiac and immune systems,
usually at an unconscious level via the vagus and sympathetic nerves.
Stress causes sympathetic nerve stimulation with the release of
adrenaline,and
cortisol
the “flight-aggression” response: the heart accelerates and
blood flow is rerouted from the brain and viscera to the muscles
After
stress, the vagus nerve is activated to counterbalance the response of
the sympathetic. This is the “rest and restoration response”: a release
of acetylcholine slows the heart, the blood flow is redirected from the
muscles to the brain for thinking and to the viscera for digestion.
Cutting edge technology offers us ways to understand this complexity and
intervene at the most strategic moment and place, thanks to the control
of Heart Rate Variability (HRV).
Stress is usually tackled through “stress control” or “stress
management” techniques that are efficient techniques including, among
others, breath control, meditation, cardiac coherence,
cognitivo-behavioural, relation skills…
It is
worth introducing psychology to top-level executives and managers since
it can greatly contribute to improve their performance, but there are
hitches:
It is
difficult for top-level executives to find the time to commit themselves
to regular sessions with a therapist.
A
company’s problems may be highly sensitive, and there can be a
reluctance to talk about them.
